Winterize Your Irrigation System

SavATree helps residential and commercial customers winterize their irrigation systems. The importance of winterizing your sprinkler system can’t be underestimated.

If you don’t shut down and winterize your irrigation system correctly, water left in the pipes can freeze, causing pipe walls to crack or rupture. Frozen water in the backflow assembly can damage the internal components.

Our professional team can winterize your irrigation system properly by performing the following services:

  • Properly closing down system
  • Blowing out water from all lines
  • Shutting down controller

Sprinkler Backflow Preventer Protection

Winterization is always ideal, but it’s important to know how to protect your home’s sprinkler system in case of an unexpected freeze before your system has been winterized.

To properly protect your system from freezing and causing costly damage, there are various steps you can take to get you through the night so you can properly winterize your system on a later date.

PLEASE NOTE: The steps detailed here are good preventative measures for unexpected freezes, but freezing temperatures can still cause damage to components of your sprinkler system.

  1. The backflow preventer, including the exposed copper pipe, is susceptible to damage from exposure to freezing temperatures.
  2. To properly protect your backflow, you want to wrap it in insulation and tape it tightly so that it remains in place. Make sure you cover any exposed copper piping during this process. If you do not have any insulation on hand and it’s an emergency, you can use an old sweater, towel or blanket as well.
  3. Place a plastic trash bag over the newly insulated backflow and tie the bag securely at the bottom. Pull the bag down to ensure nothing is exposed.
