Aphid Treatments by SavATree

Submitted by Eleni Mitchell

Aphids are small, sap-sucking insects that reproduce rapidly during warmer months.

Although these insects rarely cause severe damage, they create a sticky substance called honeydew through their feeding that attracts other insects and can lead to unsightly black, sooty mold.

Due to the aphid’s rapid reproduction cycle, early detection and treatment are crucial for mitigating the impact they can have on your trees.

SavATree’s targeted treatments are designed to control aphid populations and protect your valuable landscape.

Signs of an Aphid Infestation

Detecting an aphid infestation early is key to preventing widespread damage. Common signs of aphid infestation include:

  • Sticky leaves or substances: Aphid honeydew secretions make leaves sticky.
  • Black sooty mold: Dark fungal growth develops on aphid honeydew secretions.
  • Ants or other insects: Ants and other insects are attracted to aphid secretions and often transport aphids from infested to healthy trees. Keep an eye out for them on the undersides of leaves or along stems.
  • Leaf curling or distortion: Twisted or cupped leaves are a common sign that your tree has been infested with an aphid population.

What Causes an Aphid Infestation?

Aphid infestations often begin when winged females migrate to your landscape from nearby areas. These insects are attracted to new growth, warm weather, or trees and shrubs that have already been weakened by drought, disease, or poor growing conditions.

Though aphids are often mitigated by natural predators like ladybird beetles and lacewings, once established they can reproduce astonishingly quickly, with some species capable of producing several generations in a single growing season.

This rapid reproduction cycle is especially problematic during spring and early summer when tender new growth provides an ideal feeding environment for aphids.

Once damaging populations are present, professional intervention is often required.

How Do Aphids Harm Your Trees and Plants?

Aphids rarely kill mature trees outright, though they can cause significant harm to your trees and plants if left untreated.

As they feed, aphids extract valuable nutrients and moisture from the plant, weakening it over time. They also inject saliva into the plant, which can lead to leaf curling and distortion Additionally, the aphid’s honeydew secretion attracts ants and other insects and leads to the development of black, sooty mold.

Over time, the stress and damage caused by aphids can leave plants more vulnerable to other insects and diseases, further compromising their health. This is why SavATree offers comprehensive insect management solutions that address both aphids and other potential threats.

How to Spot Aphids

Aphids are small but visible to the naked eye, typically measuring 1/16 to 1/8 inch long. They have:

  • Pear-shaped bodies
  • Long antennae
  • Two tube-like structures (cornicles) extending from their abdomen

Look for clusters of these insects on the undersides of leaves, along stems, and on both new and weakened vegetation. They're often found in groups, where they steadily feed in one location.

Types of Aphids

There are over 2,000 varieties of aphids. Some of the most common include:

  • Wooly Apple Aphid: Attacks apple trees, appearing as white cottony clusters
  • Giant Bark Aphid: The largest aphid, found on hardwood tree branches
  • Green Peach Aphid: Affects many ornamental and fruit trees
  • Oleander Aphid: Bright yellow insects that target oleander and milkweed
  • Conifer Aphid: Several species that affect pine, spruce, and other conifers

Where to Find Aphid Treatment Near You

Aphids are difficult to eliminate once established, but SavATree's experts can help control populations with targeted treatments.

We have several treatment approaches for aphid control. This includes treatments that target aphids while minimizing impact on beneficial insects. For more persistent infestations, we may recommend systemic treatments that work from within the plant.

These direct control methods are complemented by proper pruning to remove aphid hiding places and improve air circulation, along with balanced fertilization to prevent conditions that attract aphids. We also support natural insect management by encouraging beneficial insects that prey on aphid populations.

Protecting your landscape from aphids not only saves you time and resources but also preserves the beauty and value of your property. Our ISA Certified Arborists can develop a customized prevention plan tailored to your specific landscape needs.
