Installing a Lightning Protection System

Are you concerned about a specific tree on your property every time it storms? Install a lightning protection system!

The investment only takes a few hours to install and will provide peace of mind for years to come. Installing the protection before you’re faced with the problem will save you from storm damage and the costs associated with tree removal.

The system is made up of a copper cable conductor that runs down the tree trunk to the ground, and a rod buried approximately ten feet away from the tree. If lightning should strike nearby, the system redirects the electrical current along the cable and away from the tree where it can safely dissolve into the ground.

How do I know if my tree is susceptible to lightning? Is it standing alone in an open area? It’s a target. Is it standing alone on a hill or near water? It’s in trouble. Is it an oak, ash, black locust, hemlock, pine, or tulip poplar? You better act fast.

Tulip trees are more likely to be struck by lightning simply because they are notoriously taller than any other type of trees.

The oak tree located on the property of the Linden house is a prime example. It’s standing tall, accompanied by one small cherry tree, making it a target during a storm. As a focal point of the resident’s backyard and a home to a tree swing, there was much desire to protect this particular red oak.

Lightning strikes put your trees at risk of the following:

  • Bark being ripped off the tree
  • Tree splitting
  • Broken branches
  • Major root damage that could result in death of the tree
